One of the things I love most about commissions is that it always challenges me to think outside my own box. Which is both thrilling and terrifying, in a good way! As a result, the process often leads to incorporating whole new approaches in my painting. That absolutely happened with this piece.
The client for this commission had been watching my work for years and loved seeing the new works on the easels, in the drafting stage. Just big black lines on white canvas. He would always turn to me and say “Shirley, why don’t you do a black and white series?”. My answer was always the same - I love colour, my work is all about colour. But when the time came to get him a painting for his condo, I knew it was the right time to give this a try.
He was thrilled with the end result, as was I, and loved how it worked in his space. This one commission developed into a whole series of black and white works – which have become very popular.
