A few steps away from the historic Duomo in Florence, Italy, is a gorgeous restaurant called La Sosta de’ Golosi. The owners, Nicola and Maria, commissioned me to create a piece for their amazing space, filled with sensuous, mouth-watering smells, Murano glass chandeliers, great energy, and a short walk from the Duomo. Maria is an incredibly talented jazz musician, a singer who will stop you in your tracks. This was definitely my experience the first time I heard her. So this was quite the honour to receive this call!
Because it was international, we ended up rolling the canvas in a tube, after it was completely dry, and they had it stretched and framed in Italy.
A few summers after the painting was installed, I received two emails, a few weeks apart, from two owners of different galleries I was in. Both were in Italy for a holiday, had visited the Duomo, and afterward stopped in the restaurant for some fabulous Italian food. They both recognized my work and were excited to see my card next to the painting. It’s always amazing how small the world is!
If you’re in Florence, visit La Sosta de’ Golosi and tell them Shirley sent you!
